Celebrate the bands, the venues and the people of 20th century Queensland music as SLQ Gallery is transformed into a live music space. While band music and culture of the 19th century was all about fitting in, new forms of music in the 0th century were all about striking out. With the emergence of jazz and later rock”n’roll, joining or following a band became an exercise in self-expression even rebellion, rather then tradition or connection. New popular styles and attitudes broadened the notion of community music and each decade carried its own sound. Venues became synonymous with bands and added to the experience of the music for musicians and fans alike. At times music and politics were on a collision course and new music styles challenged cultural and social values.
Remember the musical moments of then and now as you to dance your way through a jazz chill out space, a ‘rock room’ festooned with posters, t-shirts and singles, and a giant musical family tree. Or slow down and delve deeper into our musical history with digital stories of key players in the music scene.
Then get the real venue experience as you enter a six screen video installation by artist Sarah-Mace Dennis. Sounds of the Emergent State explores the changing state of music in Queensland, from the influence of American soldiers on jazz during World War 2, to the rise of punk in the 1970s and 80s, and the international emergence of Queensland bands toward the end of the twentieth century.
Throughout the Live! program, SLQ Gallery will also open its doors as a live music venue, featuring local acts on the gallery stage.
