Interrogation Hot Topic
Undercutting / Free-Pitching
In the current market place, the ever present issue of undercutting and free pitching in the design industry is more relevant than ever. Some argue that the pitch process for designers and design agencies, the expectation to present concepts or services for free is exploitative and does not foster a mutually collaborative relationship with the client. Furthermore, by devaluing the services of designers, suppliers and students, pitching and undercutting denigrates the design industry as a whole and makes it significantly harder for all individuals and businesses in the design community to obtain a financially viable living.
On the other hand, it can be seen that undercutting and pitching is a legitimate competitive expression of a free market capitalist system. Some individuals stand by the theory of “You have to be in it to win it” and belief that pitching is a necessary, unavoidable cost of obtaining new business.
Ultimately, this issue affects everyone in our design community. Hence, this discussion forum endeavors to establish a common ground within the design industry and interrogate all facets of undercutting and free pitching. What are the ethical, financial and social implications of this practice? How does it affect the design industry long term? Is it exploitation? Does it harm the bottom line? Or does it create a level playing field?
A variety of panelists, ranging from designers, product suppliers and students, will bring their respective point of view and experience to the table to encourage a better understanding and attempt to resolve some of the questions surrounding this hot topic.
