Sunshine Coast Council, through the smartArts+ program, has developed a partnership with the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast to create the Creative Industries Business Incubation Lab. The Creative Industries Business Incubation Lab aims to create an environment that fosters creative industry businesses and assists in building them into sustainable ventures. The creative industries are a significant emerging industry on the Sunshine Coast and this pilot program seeks to promote the region as a hub for creativity and innovation. The Creative Industries Business Incubation Lab will operate from an office at the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast for an initial period of 12 months from 7th January 2013 until 6th January 2014. Within this period, up to six Sunshine Coast based creative businesses will gain access to rent free office space for an agreed period and during that time will be taken through a business mentoring and incubation program. Each of the six businesses will be allocated a two month residency each, but will have an option to co-locate with other businesses in the program to extend their tenure (to be approved on a case by case basis). The Innovation Centre’s key strength is in assisting innovative start-up businesses. For the purpose of this opportunity, a creative industries business would be identified as one or more of the following sectors: film, music, fashion, digital, design, interactive media, visual arts and performing arts. Dependant on the needs of the applicant, the incubation package may include: Included free: – Rent free access to office space at the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast – Access to a business mentor and other mentoring programs – Shared reception and mail collection – Use of office equipment such as data projector, electronic white board, laminator, shredder, etc. – High speed internet access including wireless – Office furniture, desk, storage, white board, chairs, etc. – Conference and meeting rooms – Secure, 24/7 swipe-card access Included on a user pays basis: – Business briefing sessions and workshops (some workshops may be user pays) – Colour printer, photocopier, fax and scanner (user pays basis) The Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast may also provide the successful applicant with: – Access to the National Microsoft Innovation Centre (MIC) in Brisbane via the Innovation Centre partnership and the BizSpark program – Access to the Innovation Centre / University of the Sunshine Coast Library. How to apply Sunshine Coast creative businesses are encouraged to submit an expression of interest to be selected for this opportunity. Applicants will be chosen based on the selection criteria below and final decisions will be made by representatives from Sunshine Coast Council and the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast. Selection Criteria The applicant must be: 1. Registered as an Australian Business and have an Australian Business Number (ABN) 2. Have an existing or ‘close to market’ product, service or body of work 3. Be a current resident of the Sunshine Coast or have a majority of owners of the business who are residents of the Sunshine Coast 4. Operate an organisation or business in one of the following sectors: film, music, fashion, digital, design, interactive media, visual arts or performing arts 5. Have a current business plan (or an intention to create a business plan) that is commercial in nature 6. Outline how the Creative Industries Business Incubation Lab can best assist in developing the creative business.
